Official Army Body Composition Standards
The Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) uses a specific circumference-based method to estimate body fat percentage. This is widely known as the Tape Test. Our calculator uses the exact formulas derived from Army Regulation 600-9.
How to Measure Correctly
Accuracy is critical for career progression. Follow these strict measurement protocols:
- Height: Measured without shoes, standing at the position of attention.
- Neck: Measured just below the larynx, with the tape perpendicular to the long axis of the neck.
- Abdomen (Male): Measured at the level of the navel (belly button).
- Waist (Female): Measured at the narrowest point of the abdomen.
- Hips (Female): Measured at the widest point of the buttocks.
Passing Standards by Age Group
| Age Group | Male (Max %) | Female (Max %) |
|---|---|---|
| 17–20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21–27 | 22% | 32% |
| 28–39 | 24% | 34% |
| 40+ | 26% | 36% |
2026 Policy Update
Soldiers who score a 540 or higher on the ACFT (with at least 80 points in each event) are currently exempt from the body fat assessment in many commands. Always verify with your local Training NCO.
